Spacemakers

Spacemakers is STRP’s programme for youngsters of all ages and disciplines. It is a unique opportunity to be involved with STRP as an organiser, programmer, producer and/or maker. For several months, you will work together with an artist or designer in your own atelier in Eindhoven. The Spacemakers Hangout is your meeting place and available every day to work, think and organise! Together you will decide what you will create within the annual theme of STRP, for 2023 it is ‘The Art of Listening’.

The Art of Listening

In recent decades, we have rapidly replaced natural sounds and added sounds that have a function for us. Whistling birds at dawn are still there, but the average person now prefers to rely on an alarm clock. For all the artificial sounds designed from commercial interests, such as beeps at the self-scanning checkout or the coffee machine, we develop new instincts. These sounds have a purpose: they confirm that something works and can influence our behavior. Unconsciously, our perception of the world is filled with artificial sound.

But what if we delete all these artificial sounds and rebuild from silence? Can we shape a future in which we approach sound in a playful way, without commercial interest? What sounds would you use then? And for what purpose, if we can leave behind commerce and convenience? How do we experience the world then? And what new instincts do we evolve with it?

Absent Chronicles

Danny de Vlugt produces electronic music under the name Absent Chronicles, performing nationally and internationally. Recently, he performed at the Melkweg during Amsterdam Dance Event. In 2021, Danny signed a global publishing deal, which means he now writes and produces for other international artists in addition to his own project. Danny also designs and creates audiovisual works and installations. These revolve around social issues and interaction. For example, Absent Chronicles recently exhibited at the Van Gogh Museum with the installation “Thicker Than Water”, which explored the balance between nature & technology and how we humans relate to it. Visitors walked past a table covered with artificial plants and glass bowls filled with water. Touching the water caused the table to produce electronic sounds. Despite each of Danny’s works having a theme, the starting point is always that the visitor interacts with the work and, based on this, the individual decides for themself what the work means to them.

What is expected of me and what will I gain?

We offer young people a unique opportunity to collaborate with artists, designers and other youngsters of different ages, educational levels and fields of study. We do not ask for specific experiences and knowledge, only for curiosity, enthusiasm and an open mind. The most important thing is that you are open to discovering, learning new things, and that you want to share your ideas. Absent Chronicles and STRP will be your guides and mentors throughout the entire process.

During an (online) introductory meeting, we will further explain the project and discuss your wishes and capabilities. After that, you can decide whether you actually want to join or not.
